The Many Uses for Solar Hot Water
There are many uses for Solar Hot Water. There are also many different types of systems so we thought we would spend a little time going through them. Let's start with heating water for residential use.
The first system is the Direct Open Loop. This one pumps water directly through the Solar panel to be heated . It is controlled by sensors. One at the tank and one at the panel control when the pump will run. This system is used in warmer climates where freeze conditions are unlikely.
For colder climates either a Drain-back system or an Indirect Closed Loop is used. The drain-back system does what it suggests. It will drain back every night when the sun goes down or if conditions are cloudy or overcast. It has a small reservoir to handle the water that drains. This system is used in colder climates.
The Indirect Closed Loop uses a water Glycol mix that is circulated through the panel(s) and then through a heat exchanger. The glycol never comes into contact with the home water. This is Propylene Glycol and it is safe. It will not harm you, your pets, or children.
