More Geothermal Information

Here is some More Geothermal Information for you to read up on. First let's start with some interesting facts.

  • It is roughly 4,000 miles from the surface to the center of the earth.
  • At the earth's inner core temperatures can reach 7,200-12,600 degrees Fahrenheit
  • We are protected from the heat by a crust that is 3-35 miles thick.

  • Sometimes rainwater and melting snow can seep into the ground, be heated and rise back to the surface. This is how we get Hot Springs, Geysers, and Mud Pots.

  • In Geothermal Power Plants hot water and steam are pulled from the earth and used to turn turbines that create electricity.
  • Since no fuel is actually burned Geothermal only emits steam.
  • This is How Geothermal Works to create electricity and why it is Green Energy.

Geothermal for Heating and Air conditioning is accomplished by drilling wells or putting pipe loops in lakes and ponds. The wells are drilled 150-200 feet or deeper. A water anti-freeze mix is circulated through the pipes in the ground. This warm water is then used to heat the refrigerant in the system.

In cases where there is a lot of land available the pipes can be placed about 6 feet deep and the process is the same. This is cheaper because wells are not needed.

How Does Geothermal Work in simple terms? The process is a matter of pulling heat from the ground in the winter and putting the heat from the building back into the ground in the summer.

The downside to Geothermal is the cost. Systems can cost thousands more than air to air heat pumps.

In their defense the system can save 30-70% on heating and 20-50% on cooling costs so it will pay for itself. This is one reason Geothermal is becoming more popular. This is why we believe we will continue to see more geothermal systems going in.
