Hybrid Energy and What it Means

Hybrid Energy is when two different sources of energy are used together to compliment each other. A good example would be Solar Wind Energy . Solar works fine on sunny days but not well in overcast conditions. In a lot of areas when the sun is shining there is not much wind but when it is overcast the wind blows. This makes these two a good source for Energy Alternatives.

The theory is that by combining two (or more) types of energy efficiency levels exceed that of just using a single technology.

Hybrid Cars With Electrical Energy using gas and electric motors work well and offer better fuel economy than gas or diesel fired vehicles. Newer ones coming out will most likely be plug in electric/gas hybrids.Toyota has the plug in Prius and Volkswagen has one in the works.

When going off-grid with Solar PV it is advisable to have a backup generator. An auto-gen start feature can be incorporated to insure power at all times. These generators can run off of all different types of fuel including, gas, diesel, and propane.

The same can be true with a Wind Generator. It makes sense to have a backup when you plan ahead.

When you think about it off-grid systems qualify because they use either Solar and Batteries, Wind and Batteries, and Micro Hydroelectric and Batteries. There are plenty of other renewable power sources that when combined will work well together.

Here is a Report about Hybrid Programs.
