Facts About Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Energy has been around since the dawn of time. The first patent on a "system" was in 1912.

I can remember when a Geothermal heating and air conditioning unit was called a Ground Source Heat Pump.

Is it just me or does it seem the more expensive things get the fancier the name. Geothermal Heat Pump compared to Ground Source Heat Pump even sounds like it will cost more.

There are 2 basic Geothermal systems. Open Loop and Closed loop.

The loops can be installed 3 ways. Horizontally, Vertically, or in a pond or lake.Factors in deciding the installation are available ground space, soil, rock conditions, an available lake or pond.

Here are some facts about this Alternative Energy Source.

  • Geothermal heating efficiencies are 50-70% higher than conventional heating systems, and cooling efficiencies are 20-40% higher.
  • Today most Geothermal Heating systems can save up to 50% of your water heating bill by using an option called a desuperheater. This unit simply recovers waste heat and uses it to heat water.
  • The loop pipes are fused using thermal energy for a strong weld. A properly fused joint is at least 5 times stronger than the pipe.
  • All equipment is either in the ground or indoors. This adds to the life because it is not out in the harsh elements.
  • Although these system are more costly compared to conventional Heating and Air systems the extra cost can be recovered in as little as 3 years.
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps do qualify for Federal Tax Credits and possible state incentives. Click Here to see what your state offers.
